A Word to the Mayor of San Francisco

Gavin Newsom is the youngest mayor in the history of San Francisco. We knew that he was a gutsy politician, but we did not expect his gut to be as large as it is. He had not been in office for an entire month before he unleashed a “gay-marriage” tsunami, ordering the county clerk to issue same-sex marriage licenses on February 12, 2004. By so doing, he thought it would be a fete accompli.

Mayor Newsom demonstrated that he is a very decisive person, but his decision has rocked not only the city of San Francisco and the entire state of California, but it has also directly challenged the judicial system of the United States. His action has threatened the very foundation of certain moral traditions and the Constitution of America.

We strongly oppose the legalization of same-sex marriage and the action taken by Mayor Newsom for the following reasons:

(1) It is against the law of nature

The union between male and female is part of the natural order. It is in tune with the law of nature. Only such a union between a man and a woman can result in the propagation of future generations. The union between a same sex couple will never do. It is simply against nature.

(2) It destroys thousands of years of civilization

Civilization is the culmination of thousands of years of human traditions. These traditions have survived the test of time and have been passed on to generation after generation. The institution of marriage between a man and a woman is one of these tried and tested traditions in civilization and it is well established not only in certain tribes and races but throughout the entire world. As new a mayor as Newsom is, he has picked the wrong issue for renewal! His renewal is nothing but an effort to destroy thousands of years of precious human civilization.

(3) It destroys the very fabric of society

A healthy society–where citizens can enjoy peace and prosperity–depends on a stable set of social perimeters. San Francisco has long been attractive to immigrants because of its stable and healthy social settings. The affirmation of marriage between a man and a woman is one of the most fundamental fabrics of a healthy and stable society. If such a fundamental fabric frays, the society will soon follow suit. Peace and prosperity will disappear as well. Has Mayor Newsom ever thought of that?

(4) It defies the law of the state and of the wishes of the people

The mayor of a city is “the” leader of the city. He has to understand how important it is that citizens respect and obey the law and set the example himself. Was he not aware that his action would blatantly violate the law of the state of California? The law of the state of California clearly defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Furthermore, California voters already clearly indicated their desire to ban same-sex marriages in a 2000 ballot initiative. President Bush also made his stance clear by promising to “defend the sanctity of marriage by defining and protecting marriage as the union of man and woman as husband and wife.”

Conclusion

In issuing same-sex marriage licenses, Mayor Newsom has taken it upon himself to interpret the law of the city, the law of the state and the law of the country. In essence, he has placed himself above the law. His action undermined not only the law of the land and the law of nature, but also the very fabric of a stable and prosperous society. We are both shocked and scared by the action of this elected leader of our city who imposed his own agenda in blatant violation of the law. For the sake of preserving the integrity of our judicial system, we feel it is only fitting and honorable for our mayor to apologize to the people and to step down from office.
